Dr. Olugebefola is a world-renowned artist and a member of the Weusi Artists. The Weusi Artists began in Harlem in 1965 as an African American artists' collective. Although Harlem had a long legacy of great artists, those who held the purse strings in the NYC art world perceived Harlem as void of artistic creativity. In response to this belief, the Weusi Artists made it their mission to organize and challenge the racism and exclusiveness of the mainstream art institutions in N.Y. and beyond. Together, they founded a gallery and academy of fine arts and studies, motivating forces to develop, produce, and disseminate black art during the 1960s and 1970s. I unveiled it at Dr. Olugebefola's 70th birthday celebration. In celebration of his leadership, contributions and achievements, but mainly to celebrate Ademola, the man, and his giving spirit.
